December 6th - Saint Nicolas's day

Every year at this time, I'm so sad that Saint-Nicolas's celebration has not arrived to Paris and I'cant' enjoy this December 6th as it was in my memory.

It ‘s a traditional festivity in Lorraine yet and the celebration is still very alive in eastern France, including the parade, with Saint-Nicolas himself at the head, dressed in his bishop’s costume in red and white, distributing sweets and chocolates to the “good” children

And the “Père Fouettard” “Bogeyman”at the end, dressed in black and charged of whipping the children if they have not been good…

Saint-Nicolas legend has inspired the other one of Santa Claus, which can eventually explain why the Parisian aren’t interested in ?

I was always looking for Parisian gourmet addresses remembering the taste of this wonderful day of my childhood (gingerbread and chocolate…) and I finally found it recently :

The Garde Manger

Julie & Julia - French Cooking

I saw the film tonight in Vincennes (France), and this because I'm a Meryl Streep's fan and I've just read an article about the film and its big success in the States!
Mery Streep and Amy Adams are both wonderful, everyone in her playing art!
I was very impressed by the kind of woman Julia Child was at this time and by her ability to challenge everyone, and I liked the comparison with the new way of writing books !
It's a good promotion for the French old cooking receipts and I love them too, but I have to admit that we don't use so much butter for cooking anymore !
Please, dear American friends, don't think all the French wifes can eat so greasy, otherwise we all will looked like "stuffed ducks" already !

Fauchon's eclairs

I don't like advertising especially for luxury brands because they are already well known and don't need my blog...
But today, I'd like telling you more about Fauchon's eclairs, and it's 5th celebratrion.
I just passed by the boutique at Madeleine today and was very impressed by the new card especially edited for the next week-end : 45 savoury and salted or sweet creative variations of this French mythical dessert, all rich in colours, flavours and full of fantasy.
Don't miss them next week-end (Sept. 4/5/09/2009) and if you try them let me know if they are as good as they look like on the card!

"Like a real Parisian" from Dorothy Renn

Remember the saying: "Give someone a fish, you feed them for a day. Teach someone to fish, they feed themselves for life"?
I had an experience recently where I was "taught to fish." That is one of the unexpected advantages that I found from my participation in Paris Version Francaise. I found myself trying things and doing things I never expected to be able to do. For example, after being taken to wonderful brasseries, bistrots, and restaurants by the knowledgeable people at Paris Version Francaise, and being introduced to the chef and having wonderful talks with the owners, I found myself naturally and easily doing the same with the owners of a restaurant I happened upon when I was by myself. It's called Le Passage des Carmagnoles and it is at Passage Bonne Graine, Paris 11. A young chef and his mentor (partner) have teamed up to enact a dream of presenting original, and delicious, French and Italian cuisine to Paris. The chef (only 23 years old) is creative and innovative. It was thoroughly fun and interesting to get to know them and become part of their clientele.
And now I feel like a real "Parisienne," thanks to Paris Version Francaise!

The Parisian Brasseries

The word "brasseries" all by itself evokes the Parisian life, large tables with “banquettes” and “garcons” in white aprons, the noise of plates and glasses, not to mention the conversations ... the whole atmosphere and friendship you are looking for in this traditional place!

The “brasseries” are part of the Parisian scene and although some have become famous (Lipp, La Coupole ..) we should not forget the name "beer" therefore their name.

Open throughout the day until late at night and usually 7 days a week, they offer a continuous service and are very popular after a show. The menus are usually simple and are traditional dishes (celery mayonnaise, egg mayo, lamb, steak frites, choucroute ..)and can be found everywhere.

A more "chic" tendency has been developed in most of the places bought by “Groupe Flo” (La Coupole, Chez Bofinger, Chez Julien, Le Balzar, Le Vaudeville, Le Boeuf sur le Toit ...) or by “Les Frères Blancs” (La Lorraine, Le Procope, Chez Jenny, Le Pied de Cochon ...) but there are still a few rare places like Chez Vagenende or Chez Thoumieux (which recently acquired a new owner) where there is still this simple friendly spirit that we seek when we open the door of one of them!

My Parisian experience from Dorothy Renn

One of the really neat things about the internet is that, if you’re smart, you can use it to meet people that in former times never would have been possible. A case in point is “Paris-version- francaise” http://www.parisvf.com.
I’m so glad I was introduced to this wonderful website and the people who created it. Paris is a complicated and complex place and much of its charm lies beyond the Eiffel Tower and the other “tourist” monuments. At its center are the wonderful French people themselves, some of whom are willing to share their Paris experience with others. The Parisian experience is so very much more personal and worthwhile when you have Parisians willing to share their unique city and their own Parisian experience with those from far away. I am really glad I didn’t miss it. My interest in and knowledge of Paris and French culture have grown enormously, and now I’ve decided to continue my study of the French language. It’s so nice to be accepted at the level one is, and then with encouragement, to find oneself expanding like an emerging butterfly.

La Galette des Rois, French tradition

If there is a French tradition respected and expected by everyone, it’s the “Galette des Rois”, (King’s cake) which can be bought in any bakery at the end of December. The religious origin of this traditional cake, the Epiphany’s celebration on January 6th of the visit of the Magi to the Baby Jesus, seems remote, but the pleasure lies in sharing this wonderful patisserie with the family, the neighbors, co-workers at the office or members of an association, because it’s often used for exchanging new year’s wishes and therefore the Galette can’t ever be eaten alone.
As for the “fève”, now in porcelain or plastic, it owes its name to the real bean once placed in it to designate the King of the day. As this King has to offer a new “galette” next Sunday, you’ll enjoy eating it through the entire month of January!
Usually dry or stuffed with “frangipane”, the Galette has recently been proposed in many other varieties by famous Parisian pastries: chocolate at Maison du Chocolat, macaroon with caramel at Lenôtre, Ispahan’s version at Pierre Hermé, with apples at Valentin, while organic at Monoprix with Moisan the baker or chocolate raspberry at Daloyau...

Joyeux Noël, Merry Christmas, Frohe Weihnachten..

Unfortunately, French traditional Christmas dinner isn’t very dietetic and it isn’t easy to get through this wonderful time without having one or two pounds to lose again! But Christmas time is such a wonderful time to share with family members or friends, that I’m very pleased to share my best shopping addresses with you. We’ll have “petits-fours” with Champagne for the start, and I’ll go to Gérard Mulot to buy them. Then there’ll be oysters directly from my fish marketer (they must come directly from the sea ). After that , we’ll have foie gras (the best one is the one sold in Garde-Manger in rue d’Aligre because it’s produced fresh daily and reminds me of my origins), and then "Dinde farcie" stuffed turkey (which I’ll buy at my favorite butcher, who is also the best provider and has the perfect quality)… For dessert we’ll certainly have the famous “bûche de Noël," and like last year I'll buy a real Christmas one at Stephan Secco's, who is the last pâtissier to offer a “roullé” for me!
No cheese and no salmon ? Well it’s for lunch the next day…
Merry Christmas to all of you, and happy dining!

"The new Beaujolais has arrived!"

It’s the most famous event of this month in France and especially in Paris and you can’t pass any wine shop or restaurant without seeing big posters announcing “Le Beaujolais Nouveau est arrivé”.
On this third Thursday of November, the 20th for this year, you would enjoy celebrating its arrival through Parisian streets : it’s a popular wine and it never needs to be taken too seriously, although Beaujolais Nouveau’s arrival has become fashionable. The best way to taste it is with French charcuteries, pâtes, cheeses, breads and to share this ritual celebration with friends, or family members or any other Parisians.

Do you want to know the right words to put through the conversation ?

Thanks to our friend Sophie from Le Vin se Livre we would suggest to say :

at the view : "jolie robe", "belle couleur" (cerise, rubis.. ) (cherry, purple-pink..)
in the mouth : "léger", "fruité", "tendre", "gouleyant" (easy-drinking)..

Beaujolais nouveau Lovers usually drink a little to much to drive back to their home. Why don't you ask for a Paris vacation apartment for rent with myKeystoPARIS ?

Paris Gourmand

Vous êtes nombreux à me demander mes adresses gourmandes !
