40 years of French television ads

Comparing two cultures can be fun. In this case, I'm comparing the United States and France in terms of the televison ads. Right now there is a retrospective of 40 years of French television ads at the Musee des Arts Decoratifs. The French ads are far more subtle than the American ones that I've seen. Sometimes it's hard to tell what brand is being advertised, something that rarely happens in American ads. The French ads seemed more interesting, also, but that could be due to the fact that the ones I was watching at the museum were new to me. I do think the American advertisers overdo the repetition factor, though. My all-time favorite ad is a French one that I saw in 2007. It showed a car that turned itself into a transformer. That was cool. If you get a chance, check out the ads at the museum. Everyone who was watching them was smiling.

Exposition Le Petit Nicolas

"Like a real Parisian" from Dorothy Renn

Remember the saying: "Give someone a fish, you feed them for a day. Teach someone to fish, they feed themselves for life"?
I had an experience recently where I was "taught to fish." That is one of the unexpected advantages that I found from my participation in Paris Version Francaise. I found myself trying things and doing things I never expected to be able to do. For example, after being taken to wonderful brasseries, bistrots, and restaurants by the knowledgeable people at Paris Version Francaise, and being introduced to the chef and having wonderful talks with the owners, I found myself naturally and easily doing the same with the owners of a restaurant I happened upon when I was by myself. It's called Le Passage des Carmagnoles and it is at Passage Bonne Graine, Paris 11. A young chef and his mentor (partner) have teamed up to enact a dream of presenting original, and delicious, French and Italian cuisine to Paris. The chef (only 23 years old) is creative and innovative. It was thoroughly fun and interesting to get to know them and become part of their clientele.
And now I feel like a real "Parisienne," thanks to Paris Version Francaise!

The Parisian Brasseries

The word "brasseries" all by itself evokes the Parisian life, large tables with “banquettes” and “garcons” in white aprons, the noise of plates and glasses, not to mention the conversations ... the whole atmosphere and friendship you are looking for in this traditional place!

The “brasseries” are part of the Parisian scene and although some have become famous (Lipp, La Coupole ..) we should not forget the name "beer" therefore their name.

Open throughout the day until late at night and usually 7 days a week, they offer a continuous service and are very popular after a show. The menus are usually simple and are traditional dishes (celery mayonnaise, egg mayo, lamb, steak frites, choucroute ..)and can be found everywhere.

A more "chic" tendency has been developed in most of the places bought by “Groupe Flo” (La Coupole, Chez Bofinger, Chez Julien, Le Balzar, Le Vaudeville, Le Boeuf sur le Toit ...) or by “Les Frères Blancs” (La Lorraine, Le Procope, Chez Jenny, Le Pied de Cochon ...) but there are still a few rare places like Chez Vagenende or Chez Thoumieux (which recently acquired a new owner) where there is still this simple friendly spirit that we seek when we open the door of one of them!
